This week, Reception has been exploring 2D shapes, focusing on circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and other quadrilaterals.
In one activity, the children were challenged to create different 2D shapes using picture prompts. After they had spent some time making their shapes, we discussed which ones were the easiest and which ones were more challenging. We also talked about straight and curved sides, which led to an interesting conversation about why it’s impossible to make a perfect circle!
Because the children enjoyed this activity so much, we did another fun shape challenge later in the week. This time, we used matchsticks to create shape pictures. We had to draw the wheels on the train, though, since making a circle with matchsticks is impossible!
