In a creative and engaging activity, during our Music lesson with Ms Pryce, children were tasked with expressing the pace of music through their movements on a whiteboard. This exercise aimed to deepen their understanding of the concept of tempo (the speed of music) while also encouraging self-expression and coordination.
The activity began with the children listening to a piece of music, which varied in tempo. Some pieces were upbeat and fast, while others were slow and calming.
Before starting, the children were introduced to the idea of tempo, explaining how music can be fast or slow, and how this pace can be represented through their own movements.
Each child was given a whiteboard and a pen. As the music played, they were asked to move their pens in a way that matched the pace of the music. For faster, more upbeat songs, the children drew in quick, sweeping motions, creating bold, energetic lines. For slower songs, their pen movements were slower and more deliberate, with smoother, flowing lines emerging from the board. The whiteboard became a canvas for their interpretation of the music, where each stroke reflected the tempo.
