At St Mary and St Pancras CE Primary School, we believe that art and design will engage, inspire and challenge our children by introducing them to a broad range of techniques, materials and artists, craftspeople and designers. We want to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, explore, take risks, invent and create. The curriculum will enable our children to study authentic art styles and artists, explore their own identity and develop curiosity and develop skills. Most importantly, we want them to foster a positive, life-long relationship with the subject and have fun. Themes and activities for Art and Design are closely linked to the whole school curriculum overview from Nursery through to Year 6; we have tried to establish meaningful cross curricular links with units of learning covered in class as well as making sure NC skills in Art are closely embedded in work carried out in lessons in each of the key stages.
We believe that Art plays an important role in developing our children’s social and emotional well-being, as well as allowing their creativity to shine. There is no such thing as being ‘bad’ at art, just a lack of confidence. We know that there are budding future artists amongst our children and aspire for them to be spotted, nurtured and encouraged to continue developing their talents through the next stage of their education.
