We believe that Design Technology is a dynamic subject that fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and practical learning experiences.
At St Mary and St Pancras Primary School, we combined integrated Design Technology projects that have meaningful connections to units of learning with stand-alone projects that allow children to build knowledge and skills to complement the full Design Technology curriculum. During our cross-curricular projects, children explore how design and technology can enhance their understanding of subjects such as Science, History, and Geography. By incorporating Design Technology into our curriculum, we empower children to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts.
Our Design Technology curriculum emphasises the design process, which encourages our children to think critically, imagine possibilities, take risks, and create innovative solutions. Our goal is to nurture a generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world. They learn to identify problems, generate ideas, make prototypes, and evaluate their designs.
Children make their items both individually and collaboratively. Through group projects, they develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills as they navigate challenges and share their ideas. Collaborative work fosters a supportive and inclusive learning environment, where children learn from one another and appreciate diverse perspectives. Evaluating their projects, often as the project takes place, allows them to think critically and improve as designers throughout their time in Primary School.
Cooking and nutrition are integral components of our Design Technology program. We believe in equipping our children with essential life skills, and cooking provides an excellent opportunity for them to develop an understanding of healthy eating habits and practical culinary skills. Through hands-on cooking experiences, our children learn about nutrition, food preparation techniques, and the importance of a balanced diet. These experiences also foster creativity in the kitchen and promote a love for exploring new flavours and ingredients.
