This week, Year 2 had a wonderful time in Design Technology, diving into the world of cooking and creating savoury muffins! It was a hands on experience that allowed the children to learn key cooking skills whilst also having fun in the kitchen.

The excitement started as the class was introduced to some essential cooking vocabulary. Our little chefs learned how to sieve flour, grate courgettes, sprinkle cheese, mix ingredients, chop onions, and even beat eggs. The best part? They got to put these skills into practice and make their very own delicious savoury muffins!

While the children eagerly mixed, grated, and whisked their way through the recipe, the most exciting part of the process was, of course, the tasting! The muffins came out beautifully, though some were less impressed with the result than others .

After tasting their creations, the class engaged in a thoughtful evaluation session. They discussed the appearance, smell, texture, and flavour of their muffins, offering suggestions for improvement. It was fantastic to see the children critically assess their work and think about ways to make it even better.

A special highlight was having Mr. Dunning visit Year 2 to evaluate the muffins. His feedback was fantastic! He gave the muffins a solid score of 9/10 and praised the children’s efforts. His suggestion for improvement was to find a way to prevent the muffins from sticking to their casings at the bottom. A small tweak, but one that will help us aim for that perfect 10/10!

The recipe we followed can be found on BBC Good Food under ‘Savoury Muffins,’ and it’s not just tasty—it’s also healthy and budget-friendly. We’d love to see if any of our Year 2 families can make the muffins at home and solve the sticking issue for a perfect score!

It’s been a wonderful week of learning, creativity and delicious results. Well done to all our Year 2 chefs—you’ve certainly earned your chef hats!

Have a wonderful break.
