Homework is anything that children do outside the normal school day that contributes to their learning in response to guidance from the school. Homework encompasses a whole variety of activities instigated by teachers and parents to support children’s learning.

Types of homework for ALL children in school

Nursery & Reception

  • Key vocabulary from current topics
  • Reading books sent home weekly, with the expectation of parents reading with their children for ten minutes every day. Children in Reception will be sent home with a Little Wandle phonically decodable book matched to their ability that they should read independently to an adult. They will also have a picture book for sharing. Please note they should not be expected to be able to read this independently – rather this should be read to them for enjoyment.
  • Basic skills activities (e.g. Practise counting to ten, getting dressed independently)

KS1 & KS2

  • Daily reading for 15-20 minutes.
Children in Year 1 (and Year 2 during the first half of the Autumn term) will be sent home with a Little Wandle phonically decodable book matched to their ability that they should read independently to an adult. They will also have a picture book for sharing. Please note they should not be expected to be able to read this independently – rather this should be read to them for enjoyment. Children in the remainder of the school will be sent home with a book matched to their level that should be read daily. They will also have a ‘sharing book’ to enjoy with someone at home.
  • Basic skills activities (e.g. spellings, times tables)
  • A selection of short tasks given on a weekly basis
  • During the holidays (except Christmas), children will be given a menu of activities to choose from (see example below)
  • In Year 6, additional homework will be given in preparation for SATs (e.g. Reading comprehensions, revision tasks)
